All About Wedding Photography in 2018
Everything You Need to Know about Wedding Photography
Your wedding day should be a dream come true. It is a time when all of your favourite people in the world come together to celebrate your love for that special someone. It is definitely a day that you want to have immortalized. Of course, the best way to do that is with incredible wedding photography.
Unfortunately, getting those perfect wedding shots isn’t always simple. It’s a crazy, chaotic day and it is easy to miss prime photo ops. To make matters worse, lots of people aren’t comfortable in front of the camera and end up looking stiff and awkward even though they were having a blast at the wedding.
And, of course, the very worst of the worst is ending up with a lousy wedding photographer. Sadly, as a wedding photographer, I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that not all photographers are created equally. Some lack of skill and experience, while others simply don’t know how to handle weddings. Shooting photos of a special event and working with inexperienced models is a different world from what many magazines, newspaper, and other print photographers are used to. It takes a particular understanding and demeanour to excel as a wedding photographer.
To get the perfect wedding photography, couples also need to have some insights. The good news here is that you can steal all of the best tips from an insider--- yours truly!
Ready to get your own dream wedding album? Here is everything you need to know about wedding photography.
Find the Perfect Photographer
Of course, the most critical step to getting your perfect wedding photography is finding the right photographer. Of course, as a wedding photographer in Dublin, I’d love to tell you that I’m the best choice for every couple in Ireland! But, the truth is that it’s all about finding the right fit for you.
Personality and style matches are critical for wedding photographers and couples. Everyone has a different eye for what is beautiful, and it is essential that you are the on the same page as your photographer.
Before you book a photographer, do interviews. Take your time and only book a wedding photographer when you feel 100% confident with your decision.

Find the Perfect Venue
Some places are just so incredibly beautiful that they would look amazing without a single candle or flower. Finding the perfect venue, however, is about more than just going to a beautiful place. To get your ideal wedding photography, you need a venue that is right for you. Again, it is all about finding your own style. Decide what kind of atmosphere you would like to create because that “vibe” will translate into your wedding photos. Not sure where to begin? Check out some shots of my favourite wedding venues in Ireland to get a sense of what you love, as well as what isn’t quite your style.
Define Your Style
When you are working with a wedding photographer, it is so important to define your style. We can’t read your mind, so never assume that anything can go unspoken. Be crystal clear about what you love and what you hate.
Do you like candid shots? Traditional posed photos? Unconventional, artistic styles? Find examples of your favourite shots and explain why you love them. Show your wedding photographer shots that you don’t like as well, and clarify why they aren’t your style.
Connect Your Wedding Vendors
As a wedding photographer, I work closely with others in the wedding industry. In Ireland, the DJs, wedding planners, coordinators, hotel staff, and wedding photographers are just one big happy family! On your wedding day, we are all colleagues so it’s good for us to be able to connect. Check with everyone involved and make sure that they are okay with sharing contact information, then distribute it! Even if we don’t end up using it, it can be handy to have this detail. For wedding photography, it can be nice to be able to chat with a DJ to see when certain dances are happening or talk to the wedding planner to organise photos. You are going to busy on the big day so don’t leave yourself as the middleman between everyone.
Make a Wedding Photography Timeline
We wedding photographers don’t like surprises! Let us know everything that you have in store for the big day. Any changes in lighting or venue take some planning if you want the perfect wedding photos. If you have a special dance or run outside planned, let us know. Sometimes we need to add some lights or change the setup in some way. Make sure that we are never caught off guard so that we never miss that perfect shot.
Tell Us What Is DIY
Did your mum make a beautiful centrepiece? Did you and your maid of honour create all of the place settings? If you have any special DIY touches in the wedding, let your wedding photographer know. They make for perfect wedding photographs that add a touch of your unique personality and style. It is also fun to pose the creator with their creation!
